In the ongoing test series of England against West Indies, England Captain Joe Root heard a ‘Homophobic’ taunt from pacer Shannon Gabriel during the third test. Then Root was heard in reply with the taunt, “don’t use it as an insult. There’s nothing wrong with being gay,” after Gabriel tried to sledge the English batsman.
It is not known what was the exact comment was, as the stump mic unable to pick that up. Umpires also warned the Windies pacer for these conversations. At the end of the day, Root did not reveal what was the exact comment was but he exclaimed that he “might regret” for what he said on the field.
Root was happy to leave the topic down, he did not want to extend it further, but from the reports, it was sure that Shannon Gabriel made a comment on his personal character. ICC will take a close look on the matter and they will surely come with some decision very soon.
