Who will bat at number four for India? It was a million dollar question before the start of ICC World Cup 2019. The race was on between Vijay Shankar and KL Rahul. Both showed their excessive talents in IPL 2019. Vijay Shankar was picked by the selectors for his all-around capability. But, in the second warm-up match against Bangladesh on 28th May 2019, a blistering knock from KL Rahul and a failure from Shankar cleared the path between them.
Dinesh Karthik was also a choice for the fourth spot, but it seems that Rahul finally made it clear. Rahul played a fantastic inning of 113 runs from 78 balls with 8 boundaries and 7 sixes. He started his innings at a very crucial stage when Bangladesh bowlers took a strong grasp over their bowling, restricted India to make any partnerships. With recent few good performances from IPL, his good form continues, and he also tried to make an impact against New Zealand team in the first warm-up match but luck didn’t favor.
The partnership of Rahul and Dhoni gave Indian middle order batting a strong momentum before the start of the ICC World Cup 2019. Spinners also showing great performances in both warm-up matches and it will be a challenge to face Kuldeep, Chahal and Jadeja trio in the upcoming matches. In both matches, Vijay Shankar failed to fire in batting and could not capitalize his bowling as well. It will be hard to see him in the playing XI in the main World Cup matches.
